What building energy performance benchmarks are used in SMEasure?

SMEasure uses the national benchmarks for typical and the good practice energy performance published by CIBSE (Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers). We use CIBSE’s Guide F benchmarks as these have granularity within building type categories, for example, there are four office type options.

For most building types the benchmark unit use is kWh/meter square of treated floor space/year for gas and electricity.

The best practice benchmark is 40% better than the typical practice benchmark.

CIBSE benchmarks are used to set the gradient in the A-G rating scheme of the Display Energy Certificate (DEC). D grade will be typical practice. A grade will be best practice. G grade will be more than 200% above typical practice.
